Single: Porcupine Tree - Of The New Day

Of the New Day. Zo luidt de titel van de nieuwe (2e) single die is uitgebracht door de Engelse prog rock-legende Porcupine Tree. Het is de voorbode van het heuse nieuwe (11e) studio-album Closure/Continuation dat op vrijdag 14 juni a.s. verschijnt via Music For Nations/Sony Music als opvolger van The Incident uit 2009, en het eerste nieuwe studio-album in 13 jaar tijd dat Steven Wilson, Richard Barbieri en Gavin Harrison uitbrengen.
Zowel de vorige single ‘Harriddan’ als het prachtige en verrassende ‘Of the New Day’ zijn de perfecte herintroductie van Porcupine Tree’s onderscheidende sound. Een muzikale trip die de terugkeer inluidt van deze internationale gevierde rockband die muzikaal laveert tussen acts als bijvoorbeeld Genesis, ELP, Yes, Marillion, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush, Opeth en Tool.
Steven Wilson: Of the New Day’ is a song of rebirth, emerging from darkness. It sounds deceptively simple, a recognisably atypical Porcupine Tree ballad. That is until you realise that the length of the bars is constantly changing, flipping between bars of regular 4/4 time to 3/4, to 5/4 to 6/4, 11/4, so that the track never settles into any steady time. I think it’s what Porcupine Tree does really well, to come up with a basic idea that’s almost intellectual or mathematical, but carry it off in a way that sounds completely natural and accessible. At least I hope there’s no sense of us being clever for the sake of it or putting technique over musicality. That is unless you want to specifically home in on that side of the composition.
Op maandag 7 november 2022 geeft de band een exclusief Benelux concert in de Ziggo Dome Amsterdam (NL). In oktober 2010 stond de band voor het laatst op het podium.
