Nieuw album: IDLES - Crawler

Op 12 november brengt IDLES hun vierde studioalbum ‘Crawler’ uit. Dit album is de opvolger van ‘Ultra Mono’ (2020). De 14 tracks van het album zijn opgenomen in de beroemde Real World Studios in Bath, tijdens de Covid-19 pandemie. Het album is geproduceerd door Kenny Beats (Vince Staples, Slowthai, Freddie Gibbs) en IDLES-gitarist Mark Bowen. Beluister hieronder de nieuwe single ‘The Beachland Ballroom’.
De eerste single ‘The Beachland Ballroom’, vernoemd naar de iconische locatie in Ohio, is een soulnummer met aangrijpende vocals van frontman Joe Talbot.
“It’s the most important song on the album, really. There’s so many bands that go through the small rooms and dream of making it into the big rooms. Being able to write a soul tune like this made me go, fuck — we’re at a place where we’re actually allowed to go to these big rooms and be creative and not just go through the motions and really appreciate what we’ve got. The song is sort of an allegory of feeling lost and getting through it. It’s one that I really love singing.” Aldus Joe Talbot.
Bowen voegt eraan toe: “I didn’t know Joe could sing like that. He’s been trying to write ‘Be My Baby’ since the very beginning, but he didn’t want to be the punk guy wearing the Motown clothes. He wanted it to feel natural, and this song is.”
Op ‘Crawler’ brengt de groep verhalen over trauma, verslaving en herstel tot leven met hun meest ontroerende muziek tot nu toe. Er zijn natuurlijk genoeg tracks op het album die voor complete chaos gaan zorgen in volgepakte concertzalen, zoals de schurende glamrock van ‘The Wheel’, de 30 seconde durende grindcore puncher ‘Wizz’ en de verpulverende bas- en drumgroove van ‘The New Sensation’. Maar op ‘Crawler’ laat IDLES ook een nieuwe kant van zichzelf zien met nummers die je niet direct verwacht bij de band. Het nummer ‘Progress’ is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Het dient als een “mantra van realisatie” die zowel het lichaam als geest kalmeert. Het album heeft een nuance en balans dat we nooit eerder zo helder hoorden van IDLES.
Op 19 en 20 februari 2022 staat de band in een uitverkochte Melkweg.
