Triomf voor TGA in New York

Van 23 t/m 25 oktober speelde TA Angels in America voor uitverkochte zalen in de Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). Pers en publiek waren uitzinnig over de voorstelling: in many ways the most penetrating “Angels” that I’ve seen, schreef de NY Times.
Een Amerikaanse klassieker terugbrengen naar New York was een van onze grootste uitdagingen tot nu toe, vindt Ivo van Hove. Alsof je in het hol van de leeuw moet spelen. In NY werd ooit de eerste, legendarische voorstelling van Angels in America opgevoerd die in ieders geheugen staat gegrift. Als Nederlands gezelschap ga je daarmee natuurlijk niet in competitie, we hebben een geheel eigen interpretatie van het stuk. Maar we staan er wel met een groot historisch besef._

De hooggespannen verwachtingen werden waargemaakt. De voorstelling Angels in America – die sinds 2008 bij TA op het repertoire staat – werd voor het eerst in New York opgevoerd.
Naast o.a. Isabelle Huppert, Rufus Wainwright, Corey Stoll en Benjamin Barber, zat ook Michael Cunningham in de zaal: Once again, that was ravishing. I’ve seen Angels three or four times and that was, truly, the most true and potent and strangely beautiful production I’ve seen. Ook auteur Tony Kushner is lyrisch. I was absolutely gripped by it from the very beginning. It was a reminder from the heart of theater to me that I am a playwright, and that one of the great things about theater is that with nothing more than an empty space, and an absolutely gorgeous group of amazingly talented actors, and a really great director, you can make this event., aldus Kushner.
De lovende perskritieken volgden in snel tempo. Yet this is in many ways the most penetrating “Angels” that I’ve seen. Mr. van Hove finds a universal heart that seems destined to beat, loudly and steadily, for as long as there is theater. schreef Ben Brantley in de NY Times. Time Out New York beloont de voorstelling met het maximal aantal sterren en bloklettert: it’s a first-rate production of a masterpiece, one that reveals the play’s clean, strong bones and pays honest tribute to its scope. In The Globe and Mail lezen we: The Toneelgroep Amsterdam ensemble demonstrates the benefit of the European repertory theatre model –this group has been performing these characters since 2008 and have a deep intimacy with the parts rarely found on this side of the Atlantic. This allows van Hove to simply stage Kushner’s plays like open wounds. En ook The Huffington Post prijst het ensemble: Kesting does a superb job of portraying Cohn’s hideous and, shocking to say, sympathetic arc. His achievements are equaled by the entire cast, all of them imbued with the passion, terror and humor Kushner demands. Ticket buyers will marvel at their stamina alone.
Toneelgroep Amsterdam over de grens
Toneelgroep Amsterdam speelt gemiddeld 75 tot 100 voorstelling per seizoen in het buitenland. Overal ter wereld worden de voorstellingen in het Nederlands gespeeld en voorzien van boventiteling. Zo ook La voix Humaine, Othello en Scènes uit een huwelijk waarmee TA deze maand nog respectievelijk in Wuzhen (China), Taipei (Taiwan) en Zürich staat. Het internationale succes van TA was afgelopen zaterdag nog te zien bij Nieuwsuur (NPO2) in de reportage Toneelgroep verovert de wereld.
